Art, architecture and design in the age of technology

The pen is a scepter, talking stick, and wand— when you raise it, people watch and wait.

ART  IS  MAKING  an  aesthetic  thing  through  a  skill  that  has  been  acquired  by  artists.  Certain  institutions  promote  specific  works  of  art  according  to  schooled  opinions  about  what  constitutes  good  or  bad  examples  of  art.  That  is  artism—a  word  for  a  religion  of  refined  culture.  It  manufactures  dogmatic  beliefs  about  creative  acts.              A  practical  definition  of  visual  art  is  "thinking  or  feeling  through  the  hands."  When  a  brain  gives  orders  that  cause  the  body  to  do  things,  it  creates  a  feedback  loop  that  changes  the  environment  as  well  as  the  brain  that  gives  the  commands—then  the  new,  modified  situations  affect  the  kinds  of  orders  that  the  brain  wants  to  command.  It's  art:  people's  need  to  express  and  make  impacts  on  their  world.  That  makes  everybody  an  artist.                  If  everybody  is  an  artist,  then  art  museums  are  full  of  somebody's  idea  of  art.  They  are  types  of  churches,  guarded  by  priests  who  reinforce  those  ideas  about  what  art  is.  And  one  can  see  that  those  gatekeepers  downplay  Van  Gogh  as  a  human  being  and  focus  on  him  as  an  art-maker.  Like  our  fascination  with  movie  stars,  the  interesting  thing  is  what's  in  the  screen  frame,  not  what  is  the  same  as  average  people.  Orthodoxy  colors  the  art—the  label,  “painter,”  substitutes  for  a  reformer,  mystic,  astronomer  or  any  other  applied  title.
